Description

Large Chancay Anthropomorphic Urn Vessel

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru | 1000–1450 CE

A Fine Large characterful Chancay culture ceramic urn, fashioned in the form of a stylized human figure. This large vessel, typical of the Late Intermediate Period on the central coast of Peru, features an ovoid body with applied facial and limb details, and is decorated with bold black painted designs over a cream slip.

The figure wears a tall, cylindrical headdress or crown, with prominent ear spools and striking painted facial features—including linear accents and wide, staring eyes. A broad horizontal band encircles the torso, perhaps symbolizing textile patterns or ritual body paint. The vessel likely served a funerary or ceremonial purpose
