Cultural Significance of Ere Ibeji
The Yoruba people of Nigeria have one of the highest twin birth rates in the world. In Yoruba belief, twins are sacred and spiritually powerful. When one twin dies, a carved figure — called Ere Ibeji (“sacred image of the twin”) — is commissioned to honor the spirit of the deceased and maintain spiritual balance for the surviving sibling and family.
These figures are lovingly cared for, clothed, bathed, and offered food, continuing the spiritual presence of the twin in the household.
