Description
Antique Asian Mother-of-Pearl Inlaid Hardwood Cross
China or Vietnam, 19th Century
A finely crafted antique Christian cross in toned hardwood, intricately inlaid with luminous mother-of-pearl in scrolling floral and foliate motifs. The cross features a trefoil-shaped terminal design and a small suspension ring at the top for wall hanging.
The decoration is executed in the traditional East Asian manner, with delicately cut shell inlays forming trailing vines, blossoms, and symmetrical ornamental scrollwork across the entire surface. At the center is a small engraved cross motif integrated into the design. The shimmering iridescence of the shell contrasts beautifully with the warm patina of the hardwood ground.
Such pieces were produced in China and Vietnam during the 19th century for Christian communities and missionary markets, combining Western religious form with refined local decorative craftsmanship. The floral inlay patterns and stylized scrolling are characteristic of regional mother-of-pearl work of the period.
