Description
Fine Antique Indian Mughal Brass bronze Ewer Altaba 19th century
A substantial and finely hand-crafted 19th century Mughal-style copper ewer (aftaba), retaining traces of original silver wash and exhibiting exceptional hand-engraved decoration throughout.
Of classic pear-shaped form, the vessel features a long tapered spout, high scrolling handle with decorative thumb rest, domed hinged lid with finial, and three applied feet. The surface is richly engraved with traditional Mughal floral motifs and teardrop cartouches, reflecting Indo-Persian artistic influence.
The body is constructed from hammered copper sheets with hand-applied elements and brazed joins. Remnants of original silvering remain visible within recessed decoration and protected areas, adding depth and character to the warm copper patina developed over time.
The ewer displays honest wear consistent with age and use, including surface abrasion and loss of silvering, which contribute to its authentic antique presence. The weight and construction reflect traditional 19th century North Indian craftsmanship rather than later decorative reproductions.
