Description
Scarce 19th Century Kabyle Flyssa Sword – Algeria
A finely crafted long-bladed Flyssa sword from northern Algeria, traditional to the Kabyle Iflissen-im-Bahr tribe. This example features a needle-like steel blade with brass inlay, incised scrollwork, and a distinctive zoomorphic hilt, likely representing a horse’s head. The spine is chamfered and decorated, characteristic of ceremonial or high-status weapons.
The original scabbard is carved from wood with geometric patterns and secured with metal bands. Two raised loops allow for strap attachment. Such pieces, especially with intact scabbards, are increasingly scarce.
