A rare Kongo native in the attire of a catholic priest cast in brass or bronze.

Christianity was introduced into the Kongo kingdom during the early colonial period by the Portuguese who converted the Kongo kings to Christianity from around 1500 ad.

These metal figures were made from melted down currency manillas and performed the same apotropaic function as fetish figures, this is a early piece with superb aged patina dating from 17th to 18th century, Kongo kingdom, Congo Angola.
